Geocaching

Geocaching.com describes Geocaching as a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called Geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment.

Geocaching is something that I always wanted to do but could never afford a GPS.
In February this year I bought myself an iPhone 3GS and to my surprise there was an application available for Geocaching. First of all I got the free trial application to see if it was any good, because I didn’t want to pay £5.99 for something that was utter crap. I need not have worried, the free version was brilliant. Within the week I had found my first Cache, it was called Clara's Cache Revived. I found this on the beach in Pevensey Bay, just along from Eastbourne. I’m not going to put specific details of the whereabouts of the Cache here just in case any Geocachers read this post, but here is a picture of the actual Cache.

This is not your typical Geocache container; usually they are small to medium Tupperware sandwich containers.
From this day I was totally hooked on Geocaching and as soon as I got home I bought the full Geocaching application from the iTunes store.

During my adventures Geocaching I have found quite a few Geocoins. Geocoins are usually stamped with a code that can be entered into a Geocache Listings site. This way the Geocoins can be tracked as it travels from Geocache to Geocache. Here are a few photos of the ones I have found.

Geocaching is not just about finding Caches.
Geocaching is also a way of keeping fit, and God only knows how much I need to get fit. Also because I love walking in the countryside, it is a chance to get out and about with my dogs Teeza and Misha. Quite often you need to walk quite a way to the location of the Caches and the dogs really enjoy themselves!
I have been trying to get the dogs to sniff out the Caches when we get close, but only Teeza seems to understand what I want from her. Although Misha is the best sniffer dog, he is only interested in finding discarded balls when out and about. I think I am going to have to associate the smell of the balls with the smell of Tupperware boxes and then I think he may just get it.
I hope that after reading this post that people might get an interest in Geocaching and enjoy the great outdoors as I do. You can take in the beautiful surroundings of where many of the Caches have been hidden, take photos if you are that way inclined and get fit to boot!

  1. How cool! I should leave my comment at just that though.. At first I was a bit confused, having never heard of this.. but after you explained about physically finding the treasure it made more sense.. not that you didn't explain, I'm just not up to date with all the tech toys out there.. sounds like fun though!!
